He has also been included as an IP Star for Trademarks & Patents in the 2022 edition of ManagingIP, which is a Euromoney Company.

Thane’s article entitled “Bright Stars or Unreliable Compasses: Navigating Patent Definiteness during the Fourth Industrial Revolution” will be published in the 2021-22 edition of the Texas A&M Law School’s Journal of Property Law. The article traces the history of the definiteness requirement starting from the 19th Century. It analyzes empirical data associated with litigating the definiteness of patent claims over the past twelve years. It then presents strategies and predicts trends concerning the validity of patent claims directed to convergent technologies, such as those relating to the Internet of Things (IoT).
February 2021
Thane will be presenting at the Global FRAND & SEP Symposium (“GFSS”) to be held at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, CA on October 21, 2022. The GFSS Advisory Board includes over twenty members from six countries. Aside from the U.S., there will be speakers from Germany, Norway, Korea and China. This symposium will address some of the most pressing global legal issues surrounding technology standards and the Internet of Things (I0T).

For the seventh time in eight years, Thane Bauz has been named to “Super Lawyers.” Super Lawyers recognizes attorneys who have distinguished themselves and is limited to no more than 5% of the attorneys in California. He was also named a Top Attorney.

As part of our pro bono commitment, Bauz IP Law is helping a community in San Diego bring a lawsuit to curb a government development project. Experts have already demonstrated that this project will have an adverse impact on the environment and threaten the safety of residents.

Thane has been invited to speak at the California Lawyers Association 2019 Annual Meeting to be held in Monterey, California October 10-12. The topic “Big Concerns with Big Data,” will focus on IP, privacy, and governance issues impacted by the emergence of Big Data analytics and automation.

Thane was a guest commentator at a lecture sponsored by Keio University in Tokyo. The topic was Fair, Reasonable and Non-Discriminatory Licensing (FRAND) terms associated with Standard Essential Patents (SEPs). The rules and policies were addressed amongst different governing bodies, courts and various standards setting organizations.

Thane Bauz was recognized by Thomson Reuters for having “demonstrated excellence in the practice of law.” The selection process is based on professional accomplishments and third-party validation. Annually, Thomson Reuters limits its awards to no more than 5% of the attorneys in California.

Thane Bauz spoke before members of the Japanese Association of Patent Attorneys (“JPAA”) in Tokyo. His presentation entitled “Patent Litigation Defense Strategies That Increase Fees and Damages Exposure” examined how the pursuit of particular patent issues in discovery, motion practice and at trial are potentially counterproductive in light of recent court decisions.

Thane Bauz presented the topic “Strategies for Dealing with Extraterritorial Applications of U.S. Patent Law” to members of the International Interest Group of the State Bar of California. In his presentation, Thane reviewed three distinct areas of U.S. patent law that have been altered by recent court decisions. He examined how these cases raise new issues for foreign companies whose products directly or indirectly enter the U.S. marketplace.

Bauz IP Law has been retained to oppose Shipping and Transit LLC, which the Electronic Frontier Foundation deemed “one of the most prolific trolls in the country.” The case involves four patents that purportedly relate to high technology used to monitor shipping operations.

ITC Affirms HTC’s Win In FlashPoint IP Case

Law360, New York (November 29, 2011, 10:02 PM ET) — The U.S. International Trade Commission on Tuesday affirmed an administrative law judge’s finding that smartphones made by Taiwan-based HTC Corp. do not violate a FlashPoint Technology Inc. digital image manipulation patent.
